Get a New Job Through facebook inc A Short Guide to facebook inc Job SearchGet a New Job Through Facebook - A Short Guide to Facebook Job SearchCHAPTER 1 Prepare your account firstMaybe you havent tried it out yet but Facebooks own job search engine is up and running, turning the world of recruiting upside down.It was first tested in late 2016 before it rolled out in the US and Canada the following year. The service has been wildly popular, which prompted Facebook to expand the listings to 40 mora countries around the globe.Facebook Job Search is a comprehensive tool that will lead you through the whole processof applying for a job. It lets you browse jobs or use filters to narrow down the search, autofill, edit, submit your application and communicate via Messenger to schedule interviews. With more than 2 billion users andmore than 65 million businesses on board, Facebookfollows LinkedIn as the second most popular social network for recruiters. The social network claims that one in four US adults already have searched for or found a job on Facebook. Become one of them and exchange scrolling your newsfeed for a meaningful job huntHeres our ultimate guide that will give you the know-how for a successfuljob searchon Facebook.Table of ContentsCHAPTER 1 Prepare your account first1. Ready to goCHAPTER 1 Prepare your account firstFacebook has become one of the most frequented places for businesses interested in hiring a new team member. Naturally, companies use Faceboo k to learn more about people they are about to hire. In fact, more and more hiring managers and supervisors have been expecting applicants to list their Facebook account to help them landbinnensee if they are a good fit or not. Think smart and invest some time in cleaning up your online presence to prevent embarrassing moments. The first impression is important, and the last thing to youd like to see blocking your way to the desired standort is your Facebook account. So besides seeing Facebook merely as a social media and communication tool, use it to your advantage as asocial media resume. Heres how1. User profileBefore you start applying for jobs, you need to make aya your account is in perfect shape. However, its good to realize that prospective employers will only see your public profile. Consider adding life events that you see as relevant and interesting for hiring managers to see. Supply photographs, pictures or graphs that will illustrate the development of your professional career or academic trail.2. Intro and AboutThink of your Intro as an important personal branding opportunity that youd like everyone looking at your profile to read first. It works similarly to your LinkedIn headline. The Facebook introduction gives you only 100 characters, so think wisely about its content. About section, on the other hand, is similar to the summary on your resume or LinkedIn profile and gives you far more space. This section is your chance to sell your skills, industry experience and unique characteristics that set you apart.3. Update your career experience and education Facebook recently introduced a more prominently displayed job and education history on your profile. Each job that you decide to list in this section will appear directly under your Intro.Adding your work history to your profile can also help you later. In the process of creating your application, Facebook will populate your application automatically with the job history indicated on your profile. When listing your companys name, make use of tagging to help your future employer see who youve already worked for.Treat each job and position as you would in the Work experience section on your resume. If necessary, replace any silly descriptions or inappropriate comments with your notable contributions and key achievements. If you happen to have large gaps in your work history, omit the dates and focus on skills and activities instead.Education section works in a similar fashion, letting you connect to your school and college page. The golden rule is to include all institutions where you received a degree or diploma.4. Skills Skills section is located slightly below the Education section. Theres a limit to the number of skills, so avoid listing bland terms and transferable skills. Be as specific as possible and always use keywords related to your desired position.Despite being easily overlooked, the section has enormous potential to increase your chances during your Facebook job se arch. Once you list your skills, they get automatically tagged in Facebooks search engine, making it much more likely that your profile will pop up in a hiring managers search results.5. TimelineYour Timeline is your casual resume that gives hiring managers an inside scoop on your personal and professional life. Make sure to fill it with vital information that will paint a rich and robust picture of your life.Another good thing to do is publish well-written posts or share articles related to your industry. At the same time, remember to strive for cohesion and consistency in your content.Avoid using profane words, hate speech, sharing hoaxes or conspiracies, posting provocative or controversial photos or speaking negatively about your current or past employer. Anything like this will work against you and ruin your job search before you even begin.6. Check your status update settingsTake control of what you post or share as a status update. For every type of Facebook activity, you hav e the opportunity to make it visible to the public, friends, only me, or other.A globe next your status update means youve shared it publicly and anyone can see it or comment on it. But dont worry, its never too late to clean up the mess. You can go back through what youve shared and modify the settings on your posts by clicking the inverted triangle. However, your comments on public Facebook pages groups are visible to anyone, without any chance of changing it.7. Review your privacy settingsIts true that prospective employers will only be able to see your public information. Still, its useful to ask yourself What would I want a recruiter or hiring manager to see?Facebook is known for changing privacy settings criteria. Review them every once in a while to make sure theres nothing that would blow your first impression. You can access them by clicking on the lock icon on the top right of your screen.Doing this general cleaning upfront will keep your profile professional and prevent y ou changing it each time you apply for a job. Also, privacy settings is the place to go if you - for any reason - dont want to be searchable by your email or phone number.8. Set up a Facebook Business pageIf you take your job search seriously, you might want to display your professional side and set up your own Facebook Business page. The trick is that Facebook pages are quickly indexed and tend to rank higher in Google search.Your business page also lets you do things that wouldnt be possible on your personal profile. One of the main features is the Notes tab which has a function similar to ablog. Its a space for your thoughts and opinions about your area of expertise. Write about specific job-related projects you were involved in or responsible for and add photos to illustrate your accomplishments. Last but not least, get your friends to like your page to give it some value, and if you want to reach even more people, try sponsoring it as well.9. Use View As functionAfter youve fi nished updating your profile, its good to perform that final check and make sure everything looks the way you wanted to.Facebooks View As function will show you what your public profile looks like to someone who wants to view it. To do this, click on the three dots just below your cover image to select the public view. However, the voransicht will only work on your laptop, not your phone.CHAPTER 2 Getting the Facebook Job Search rightOnce your profile is all set up, its time to begin the actual job search.Follow these 8 steps to take your search to another level and make the most of your time on Facebook1. Create a list of companiesYou start out looking for one specific thing, Facebook sucks you in and the hours just fly by before you realize youve been pulled way off topic. The social network is a great place where you can find almost anything, but at the same time thats the problem that you need to deal with.To avoid this during your job search, create a list of companies you want to work for. Do some research in advance. For each company you are considering, try to find out more about their work-life balance, number of employees, distance and values.2. Find job openingsAll postings live both on the companys own Facebook page and in the Jobs section. So there are two ways to kick off your search. If you already know what youre looking for, you can browse company pages one by one. But to make your search more effective, use the Jobs dashboard that is located in the Facebook web sidebar or mobile apps More section. The interface will let you apply filters like proximity, industry and whether youre interested in a full-time or part-time job.3. Search Facebook groups for jobsBesides using Facebook only as a job board, take time to explore the groups feature to find people posting jobs in your industry and area.A simple way to go about it is to enter your city and the word jobs into the search box. Usually, theres at least one group per city that shares job leads. 4. Look up company insidersThink smart and find people who work inside a company you are targeting. You can simply start type people who work at XYZ company and get a list of people that included the company in their work history. Although you have an option to contact the person directly and ask him for some inside scoop right away, youd have a better starting point if you found a mutual friend and asked for an email introduction first.5. Insert your social media resumeOnce you see an appealing job opening, click on the apply now button. It will lead you to a page thats pre-populated with your name, education, job history and any other information that youve made public on the site. This way, you dont have to start over every time but can mucksmuschenstill review and edit your information before you decide to submit your application.6. And what about your cover letter?Well, Facebook doesnt give you an option to upload your resume or cover letter. Instead, theres a 1,000-character te xt box where you can create a cover letter-style note or add some more detailed information explaining why youre the best fit for the company.7. Dont forget to click like, follow and subscribeThroughout your job search, make sure to like and follow the pages of the companies youre interested in. Alternatively, you can also stay in the loop about opportunities by hitting the subscribe button. This will ensure that any new openings created by the company will immediately show up in your newsfeed. The same applies to recruiters, employees working for your target companies, or other people youre interested in. Follow them to create a network of people that will bring the news about the industry right on your Facebook wall. Also, companies often create their career pages to establish a talent community that serves them as a pool of potential candidates. Make sure to like these pages as well to stay ahead of the game at any given moment.8. Ready to goSo what happens next?Hitting send will o pen a Messenger conversation between you and the companys Facebook page. The advantage is that you will get a confirmationonce information has been received. Also, bear in mind that the company will communicate with you directly through Messenger unless stated otherwise. Having the nature of social networks in mind, theres just one thing to remember - stay professional and hold yourself from getting too casual with emoji and gifs all over the placeFacebook job search is a thingAs Mark Zuckerberg said earlier this year, Facebooks mission is to encourage meaningful connections. But, as we all know, the social media giant is a good servant but a badeanstalt master and only those who know how to use it will truly benefit from it.The guides aim was to walk you step-by-step through its recently introduced job-hunt function and explore other Facebook features that can help you land your dream job. Hopefully, doing the job search in a structured way has saved you some time and helped you es tablish a network of contacts that you will find useful later on. For some time, Facebook will still be seen as a rather unconventional way to search for a job. But the booming size and power of a social network may soon make it become the best way to search for a job in the world and the ultimate tool for helping people connect the dots on their path to career success.Do you want to become the ultimate king of social media? Check out ourultimate guide that will make you stand out on LinkedIn, tooShare Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

Staying at the Top of the Game

Staying at the Top of the Game Staying at the Top of the Game Rochester Institute of Technologys Kate Gleason College of Engineering, known for its focus on cooperative education, has now embarked on what it calls a reverse cooperative experience offering practicing mechanical and electrical engineers an opportunity to earn a certificate in mechatronics engineering. A key element of the program is the Knorr-Bremse North America Mechatronics Laboratory, a new facility at RIT that gives students hands-on experience at fully functional work stations covering key aspects of a mechatronics curriculum. The week-long lab component is the capstone of the 12-credit mechatronics program, otherwise held online, which typically takes about two years to complete. The program is modular and designed so that engineers complete the course work at their own pace while working full-time. A lot of people think about a co-op as where students study on campus and get work experience while they are underg raduates. Were thinking of this as a reverse academic co-op to update and freshen the technical skills of practicing engineers, says Edward Hensel, associate dean for research graduate studies at RITs college of engineering. The lab, made possible by donations from Knorr-Bremse and its North American companies Bendix and New York Air Brake, also serves RITs undergraduate engineering students. Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary area of engineering that combines mechanical and electrical engineering and computer science. Image RIT The program came about after executives from Bendix commercial vehicle systems, a lead manufacturer of air brake charging and control systems, expressed a need several years ago for continuing education for their current work force in mechatronics, especially for their mechanical engineers to become better trained in electrical skills and their electrical engineers in mechanical skills. RIT has had a long-standing relationship with Bendix, particularly th rough its cooperative education program. Mechanical devices today are so dependent on computers and sensors that most require electrical engineering skills. Brake systems, for example, bedrngnis only rely on air systems and physical braking systems but also on complex sensors and computers that kick in automatically when wheels start sliding on pavement or rails. There are very few engineers with both mechanical and electrical degrees, says Jason Kolodziej, associate professor of mechanical engineering, who directs activities in the lab focusing on controls and system improvements. His colleague, John Wellin, senior lecturer, who directs lab activities focusing on instrumentation, adds, If you wanted people with knowledge in mechanics and electronics, you could just hire mechanical engineers and electrical engineers, but it is more beneficial to have that resident knowledge in each person rather than be compartmentalized. Bendix engineers made up most of the first class that receive d their certificates earlier this year. The second group, currently underway, is made up mostly of engineers from New York Air Brake, which develops train control products and systems. The students start with two introductory courses, a course that is a review for mechanical engineers and new material for electrical engineers, and another that is new to MEs but review for EEs. Those courses also serve to build company work teams often composed of engineers based in different geographic locations who have never interacted before. In the first cohort, there were students at Bendix doing truck braking systems who began collaborating with students at New York Airbrake who were doing train braking systems, Hensel says. They were developing synergies through the program. Were trying to create interdisciplinary design teams coming out of different groups of the company. The next three credits, an introduction to mechatronic systems, provide a look at real time simulation and embedded syst ems programming. Each student has an electromechanical kit to be used interactively at his or her own workstation. The final three credits take place at the lab on campus. Students are encouraged to be collaborative and help each other, just as they would in the workplace, said Hensel. According to the labs website, engineers are expected to perform in cross-disciplinary teams with high levels of collaboration and to become strong contributors to multidisciplinary design teams. While the lab was motivated by the certificate program, it can have a much broader impact on engineering education in general, Hensel says. We see significant demand well beyond the two companies we are working with. Some of the corporate members of our industrial advisory board have expressed interest for their employees. So I certainly think it will grow. Kolodziej and Wellin agree that while the lab experiments were demonstrated on equipment mostly geared to braking, the knowledge gained can be applied gen erally and could be tailored to any specific discipline. For example, in experiments on vibrations, That is a pretty common auffhrung in all machines moving through electrical systems in mechatronics, so that was more of a generic course in vibrations that gave students a perspective of whats the effect on a real system, Kolodziej says. Hensel adds that equipment can be modified and experiments swapped out to be applicable to a particular industry, such as aerospace actuator-focused or manufacturing automation-focused. The real focus is electromechanical systems and that touches almost everything, he says. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. For Further DiscussionWere thinking of this as a reverse academic co-op to update and freshen the technical skills of practicing engineers.Edward Hensel, Rochester Institute of Technology

A Cheap Way to Convert Vapor into Fresh Drinking Water

A Cheap Way to Convert Vapor into Fresh Drinking Water A Cheap Way to Convert Vapor into Fresh Drinking Water A Cheap Way to Convert Vapor into Fresh Drinking WaterMIT engineers have devised a new system that captures water wasted in clouds of vapor by zapping droplets with a beam of electrically charged particles. The droplets can be collected and then reused in a power plant or sent to a citys water supply system for a low-cost supply of water.A prototype of the system that will serve as a full-scale pilot is being installed at MITs main utility plant and scheduled to start up this fall. The natural gas co-generation power plant provides fruchtwein of the campus electricity, heating and cooling. The work is the fulfillment of a vision of mechanical engineering professor Kripa Varanasi, who wanted to come up with an electrodynamic approach to help solve the worlds serious water issue that affects every continent and billions of people. According to the United Nations, there is enough fresh water on the planet for seven billion people, but because it is distributed unevenly and much is wasted, many regions are chronically short of water.Varanasis idea was to develop some sort of device to capture water wasted from vapor where air is laden with water droplets, both from natural fog and the steam plumes discharged from industrial cooling towers. Fog harvesting, or fog collecting, is a known technique to provide a source of fresh water in dry regions. However, success depends on the often uncertain occurrence of fog and the efficiency of the collectors, which Varanasi said is only about one to three percent. Such projects in various places around the world have received mixed reviews. For YouMilitary Looks to Renewables in Battle ZonesVaranasis project began in earnest about five years ago when a student, Maher Damak, joined his team. The the work became part of Damaks thesis for his doctorate, which he earned this year.Researchers capture fog on mesh.Through extens ive lab experiments the two first began to identify the bottlenecks with current fog collection techniques, which typically uses a mesh material hung in the path of fogbanks along coasts where fog comes in from the sea. In the anfangsbuchstabe stage, the important thing was asking the right questions and realizing where the problem really was, Varanasi says.People have been focused on changing the properties of the collector itself, but Varanasi and Damak realized that the real problem was actually getting the droplets to the collector. That was a key realization, Varanasi says. They learned that the fog droplets often are carried around the mesh with the airflow, similar to what happens when air flows around an airplane wing, separating into streams passing above and below the wing. Making the wires bigger or the spaces larger would hamper overall airflow and reduce the amount of water collected even more.We started by figuring out what kind of forces we would need, Varanasi says. T heir concept was to zap water-laden air with an electrical force in order to overcome aerodynamic drag forces. With the water droplets electrically charged, they can be attracted to the fine wire mesh in their path. The droplets collect on the mesh and drain into a collecting pan.Now you have a much stronger force than the wind, Varanasi says. The fundamental work took about four years. Then almost two years ago, we started to think about what to do next, Varanasi said. In my lab we do basic science research that will change the paradigm of things, but we also think about scaling up to take things to market. I wanted to have a tactical way to have an impact on the water market.Their focus turned to the cooling towers, where water vapor is even more concentrated than fog, making the system even more efficient. The team, which now included another graduate student from Varanasis lab, Karim Khalil, built a small lab replica of a power plant cooling tower stack emitting a plume of water droplets and placed their ion beam and mesh screen on it to demonstrate the concept (which you can see on this video).belastung year with the system well on its way, the team spun off the project and started a company, Infinite Cooling, to further develop and commercialize the technology. Since then, the project has won several clean energy and entrepreneurial competitions with awards amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars. The team published an article describing their work in June in the journal Science Advances. The testing at MIT this fall will include using different types of mesh as well as data collection to use in discussions with power plants. The team will continue to monitor and gather data on how water consumption changes with the use of their technology. The device can also be adapted for cooling towers used in HVAC systems in large malls, data centers, hospitals and resorts. For a 250-MW power plant, the device is expected to collect and save over 150 million ga llons of water per year, amounting to an estimated annual $1 million in water savings, Damak says. One day soon, Varanasi envisions water farms consisting of rows and rows of cooling towers, supplying fresh water to parched communities and recovering a substantial amount of the currently wasted water. That amounts to some 39 percent of all fresh water withdrawn from rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in the U.S. to cool electric power plants that use fossil fuels or nuclear power and a savings of millions of dollars.nanzig Giges is an independent writer.Read MoreIndustry Tackles Challenges in Mass-Producing Flexible Solar PanelsCapturing and Reusing Wasted Energy with NanopeapodsRecord Efficiency Highs on SolarIn my lab we do basic science research that will change the paradigm of things, but we also think about scaling up to take things to market. Why Employers Dont Respond to Job Applications

Why Employers Dont Respond to Job ApplicationsWhy Employers Dont Respond to Job ApplicationsHow often have you wondered why employers dont respond to job applications? You read through the job posting. Twice. Your skills and work experience are a perfect match for the responsibilities of the position. You carefully crafted a job application that rivals any Academy Awardwinning speech. You followed the submission process down to the last detail. You hit send and you wait. And wait. But you never hear back from the company you applied for. Sadly, not responding to jobapplications has become a growing trend among companies. According to a CareerBuilder survey, 25% of those surveyed said that they never received an acknowledgment after submitting job applications, or worse, were not informed about the hiring managers decision after an interview. And to add insult to injury, a staggering 75% of parteicipants claimed that they hadnt heard back from at least one employer in the past year.Is i t simply that employers are rude, or is there something bigger at play here? We decided to find out, straight from the hiring managers mouths. We asked them why employers dont respond to job applications. Heres what they had to say- anonymously, of course.Providing feedback has legal and liability implications.I agree that it would be beneficial for a candidate to get feedback from potential employers, said one former hiring manager. But it is rare for someone being interviewed to receive specific feedback on how they did because of the legal implications involved and the potential liability the person sharing the information might incur.Candidates dont always commit obvious mistakes.Hiring is often subjective, he continued. Candidate A was more likable than Candidate B, Candidate B answered questions with better examples than Candidate C, and so on. It is often not that a candidate not hired committed an obvious mistake- perhaps a lot of little ones. It is that another person did be tter, and since the candidate desiring feedback wasnt part of the other candidates interview, it makes it difficult to provide feedback without seeming arbitrary.Individual hiring managers often need team approval.Said another hiring manager Hiring is often a team sport, meaning that I might like a candidate, but the decision of the team is a different candidate. This, too, will complicate the feedback to a candidate.Employers prefer hiring someone they know or who comes recommended.Another hiring manager had this to say The real reason that people do not reply to applicants is the general applicants are likely coming from the third or fourth-vieh quality of the job leads I get. The best people to hire are ones I have worked with before, and the second best are those who are recommended by people I know and respect. And the third tier are people I may meet at networking events.Recruiters may be strapped for time.Said this hiring manager Many hiring managers dont follow up because th eres simply not enough time. For each job that we post, there may be hundreds of job applications. Answering each and every one of those would be a full-time job in and of itself.Hiring decisions are made based on intangibles. An (honest) hiring manager added this One reason I wouldnt get back to someone is if I had to tell them something that they couldnt fix, such as their personality. If I didnt like them, Im not going to respond back. You dont want to offend the person- or argue with him- so you stay quiet. The general consensus from the hiring managers we interviewed was that they dont respond to the majority of the job applications they receive because of the job applications and the candidates themselves. From not reading the job posting correctly and submitting inaccurate info, to applying for a position that they are not nearly qualified for, many hiring managers opt to directly delete those applications since they feel that the job seeker didnt take the time to accurately as sess their skills and apply for the job properly. What do employers recommend if you dont hear back?So lets say that youre an amiable person with the skills and experience you need for a position- but you still dont hear back. What should you do? Well, one recruiter suggested creating a post-interview checklist, where the candidate self-assesses how they did in the critical areas of the interview. You would need to develop a list of all of the aspects that are part of the job interviews (such as quality of examples given, amount of research done that proved relevant, attire, rapport built with the interviewer, etc.). While this requires you to be objective, this might be the best way for you to determine (in lieu of speaking with the actual hiring manager) just how well you did- and what you can do better next time.

Streamlined student visas puts focus on education

Streamlined student visas puts focus on education Streamlined student visas puts focus on educationPosted November 12, 2013, by Andrea Riddell Theres good news for international students looking to study in Australia the new government is streamlining the student visa application process, a change that is set to help overseas applicants and open up the Australian higher education sector. Scheduled for implementation in 2014, the new visa processes will also apply to 22 low-risk non-university education providers for students enrolled in bachelor, masters or PhD degrees or eligible exchange programs. Minister for Education, Christopher Pyne, acknowledged the contribution of the vocational education and training sector to the Australian economy. These changes would allow the vocational training sector to contribute more freely to our plan to restore Australias tertiary education system to its former peak of almost $19 billion in ausfuhr income for the nation, Mr Pyne said. If we cut r ed tape and allow more students into Australia to access a world-class tertiary education, we all stand to gain. Under the new processing arrangements, overseas students will only need to go through three levels instead of five as part of a streamlined assessment-level framework (ALF). Students will also have more flexibility when providing financial evidence, meaning many students will be able to apply for a student visa with up to $40,000 less in the bank. It is believed that these changes will attract more international students, benefit Australias education system, create more jobs and stimulate Australias economy.
